Donna West Shepherd, 100 years old, died Tuesday, August 2, 2016. She made it to her 100th birthday party given by her family and church family. Her graveside funeral service will be held Friday, August 5, 2016, in Carolina Memorial Park, 7113 Rivers Ave. at 1:00PM. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., North Area Chapel, 2119 Dorchester Road.
Donna was born July 11, 1916 in Savannah, GA the daughter of Charles Joseph West and Nina Greeno West. She and her husband William T. Shepherd (deceased) came to Charleston from Savannah, GA during WWII and they both worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard for 35 years. She worked at the Navy Yard in the Personnel Office. Her husband and she were both awarded for their outstanding achievements while employed at the Naval Shipyard. She was a member of Park Circle Presbyterian Church, Christian Women's Club, NARF, National Secretary Association, American Camellia Society, Charleston Camellia Society as well as Atlantic and Gulf Coast Camellia Society. She and her husband, Bill, were vice-president (Bill) were both historians, secretary (Donna) as well as judges and traveled around together through the South as well as the West Coast as judges for the Camellia Society. They both loved Camellia's and her husband Bill, developed hybrids he named after her mother Nina West and daughters, Melody Anne Shepherd, "Butchie". They were married for 63 years.
She is survived by her brothers, Joseph West and Preston West (Agnes) of Savannah, GA; two daughters, Donna S. Beck of Spencer, TN and Melody S. Farrow (Bobby) of Charleston, SC; her granddaughter, Lorraine B. Montague (Bobby) of Live Oak, FL; two grandsons Billy Dexter Beck, Jr. (Julie) of Spencer, TN and David Wayne Beck (Renee) of Dickson, TN; five nephews: Ricky West (Debbie), Brian West (Becky), Mark West (Cindy), all of Savannah, Arthur McBride and Toby McBride both of Atlanta, GA; five nieces: Debbie West Hall, Savannah, GA, Marcia West Schultz (Fritz), Marietta, GA, Pamela Plaspohl Julson (Rick) and Vickie Plaspohl Cleghorn (Ricky) all of Macon, GA and Dana McBride Rudson (Mike) of Savannah, GA; brother in law Billy Plaspohl of Macon, GA; five great-granddaughters; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers in law, Maxine West McBride (Arthur) and Rhoda West Plaspohl, son in law Dexter Beck, nephew Charles West and niece Wanda McBride Grey.
