He served in the US Navy during World War II, and was in Tokyo Harbor at war's end. He received his degree in Pharmacology from North Dakota State University, Fargo, in 1949. He taught one year at Charleston Medical School, then went into business, first in Minnesota, then in Mt. Pleasant,SC. With his two partners, Grady Roney and Albert Jacobs, a small chain of drugstores was established in the Mt. Pleasant area. "Doc" was an active Rotarian, a Founder and First President of the Mt. Pleasant Rotary Club. He was a vital member of St. Barnabus Lutheran Congregation, the first Lutheran congregation in South Carolina to intentionally integrate. In retirement he was an enthusiastic participant in Rotary School Reading Programs where one young student was moved to affectionately call him "bubba".

After Mary's death (2002) and Mark's (2003), Don moved to New Mexico in a joint home venture with brother, Jay, and his wife, Isa. A year after his arrival, Don went blind and spent his last eleven years in darkness. "Doc" is survived by his beloved sister, Corrine Astrup, wife of the late Leonard, and brother, Jay and his wife, Isa, along with many beloved nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors. He will be remembered for his servant heart and his warm, welcoming smile.
