Donald B. Barkowitz

Donald B. Barkowitz, 79, of Sullivan's Island, South Carolina, husband of Roslyn Lancer Barkowitz, entered into eternal rest Thursday, February 27, 2014. His Funeral Service will be held Friday, February 28, 2014 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. Shiva will be observed at the residence beginning on Saturday, March 1 from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM and the following Sunday-Wednesday, 1:00-3:30 PM and 7:30-9:30 PM.
Mr. Barkowitz was born May 15, 1934, in Charleston, SC, son of the late Paul Barkowitz and Annie Kaufman Barkowitz. He was a graduate of Rivers High School and the College of Charleston where he played college basketball for the C of C Maroons. He later graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law and practiced law in Charleston for 36 years. He was a former magistrate for Charleston County and was a member of the Charleston County Bar Association and South Carolina Bar. He also served in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Barkowitz was the first director for the Isle of Palms athletic department and later served as a part time athletic director for the Jewish Community Center. He was a long time member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue and currently attended Chabad of Charleston. He loved to play tennis with his doubles partner, father-in-law David Lancer.
In addition to his loving wife of 47 years, Roslyn, of Sullivan's Island, SC, he is survived by his two sons, A. Randall Barkowitz and his wife, Amy, of Atlanta, GA; P. Steven Barkowitz, and his wife, Nichole, of Isle of Palms, SC; three grandchildren, Miles, Freddie and Evan to whom he was affectionately known as "PaPa"; mother-in-law and long time legal secretary, Betty "Momma Beppy" Lancer. He was preceded in death by one sister, Minnie Fried, and two brothers, Harold Barkowitz and Seymour I. Barkowitz.
