Don Howard Young

Don Howard Young, of Charleston, South Carolina, peacefully passed away at home on January 25th, 2026. He was born on November 4, 1946, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and lived a life filled with joy, laughter, devotion, and unwavering love for those around him. His funeral service will be held Saturday, January 31, 2026 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel at 4:30 pm, and the family will receive friends beginning at 3pm.

Don is survived by his wife Dorothy Schleppegrell Young; sons: Steven Charles Young of Charleston and Timothy Edward Young of Ravenel; daughter, Caraline “Shine” Michelle McClellan (husband Bryan) of Bentonville, AR; Grandsons Bryson McClellan and Cooper McClellan; stepfather, Louis Heitman of Troy, Missouri; his sister, Judy Ducker; his twin brother, Dan Young; and his brother Robert “Bobby” Young (June). He is also survived by five step‑siblings: Rick Heitman, Alan Heitman (Julie), Larry Heitman (Marybeth), Ronnie Heitman (Cherie), and Shirley Lavy (Dennis). Don was preceded in death by his parents: Reuben Young and Doris Young Heitman, and by his sister‑in‑law, Pam Young.

Don married Dorothy, and for over five decades they shared a partnership built on faith, humor, and deep affection. Don and Dottie were well known for their love of dancing the traditional Charleston Shag, and they always enjoyed “cutting a rug” together. Don was a proud father to Steven, Timothy and Caraline, who enduringly referred to him as Big D-little a- little d- little d- litte i- little o, 'Daddio.' He was so excited to be a Grandfather and became beloved "Papa" of two Grandsons, Bryson and Cooper, who brought immeasurable happiness and pride into his life.

Don lived nearly half of his life with Parkinson’s Disease, boldly pushing through daily challenges with remarkable courage and determination. He refused to let the disease define him and continued to live his best life-showing strength, perseverance, and an unwavering spirit that inspired everyone around him.For more than 20 years, Don and Dottie were devoted members of Christ Lutheran Church in Charlotte, NC, where Don dedicated himself to supporting the youth of the congregation. His steady presence, encouragement, and kindness made a lasting impact on many young lives. Don honorably served in the United States Navy, where he met one of his lifelong best friends, Dominick "Nick" Carruci, forging a friendship that remained strong throughout the years.

Don was a solid support and always there for his loving little sister, Judy. His younger brother Bob always looked up to Don and he shared a unique and lifelong connection with his identical twin brother, Dan. Don loved reminding everyone that he was the “big brother”, by three minutes. Their relationships were full of humor, loyalty, and cherished memories. They were deeply connected and would have done anything for each other. Dan lovingly nicknamed him “The Right Reverend Harry Young.”

Don will be remembered for his devotion to family, his steady kindness, and the many ways he brought joy to those around him. His legacy lives on in all who were fortunate enough to know him. He would want us to celebrate his life and to live boldly as he did.

He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
