Diana Hoffman Grieg

Diana Hoffman Grieg, PhD, 92, of Charleston, South Carolina, wife of the late Donald David Grieg passed away on Monday, September 16, 2013. A Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 22, 2013, in J. HENRY STUHR INC MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. Interment will be private. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service.
Dr. Grieg was born May 15, 1921 in Americus, Georgia, daughter of the late Ruben and Fannie Koppel Hoffman. She was a graduate of Hunter College in New York City and received her Masters Degree from Columbia Teachers College in New York City. She worked as a speech therapist for 25 years with the Westfield, NJ Public School System. Dr. Grieg received her PhD from New York University following her retirement. Her dissertation was in Speech Aphasiology and after moving to the Isle of Palms 35 years ago, she specialized in assisting stroke patients. She was an active member of the American Speech-Language- Hearing Association (ASHA). She acted as a hobby in Charleston community theater. In addition, she enjoyed attending the Charleston Symphony, boating, walking on the beach with her late husband, Donald, and her dogs. A world traveler, she was always very interested in learning languages. She cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and her beloved Westies, Charlie and Bonnie.
She is survived by her daughters, Emilie Grieg Wolitzer of Charleston, SC, and Elizabeth Grieg Brisacher Sharp and her husband, Joseph C. Sharp, of Charleston, SC; her grandchildren, Daniel Grieg of Hollywood, FL, Neil (Abigail) Wolitzer of Westfield, NJ, Shayna Brisacher Deferne of Centennial, CO, and David (Hayley) Brisacher of James Island, SC; her great-grandchildren, Caroline Rose, Ethan Gage, William Henry, Maya Diana, Emerson Suzanne, and Irie. Diana considered her loyal in-home caregivers as family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC 29406 or the Alzheimers Association SC Chapter, 2090 Executive Hall Road, Suite 130, Charleston, SC 29407.
