Dewey Govan Campbell, Sr., 81, of Mount Pleasant, SC, died Saturday, April 23, 2016. His funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2016, in Trinity United Methodist Church, 273 Meeting Street, at 2:00 p.m. Entombment, Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church Tuesday one hour prior to the service. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL.
Dewey was born July 9, 1934 in Greer, SC, son of the late George Heyward Campbell and Earline Blanton Campbell. He was a devoted member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he launched their Thursday night Community Meal for the homeless and working poor. This ministry was his passion. Dewey was a certified home inspector and a member of the American Society of Home Inspectors. He served in the S.C. Army National Guard, was a Mason, and a member of the Scottish Rite and Omar Shrine Temples.
He is survived by his daughter , Ruth C. Smith (James) of Fayetteville, NC; his two sons: Dewey G. Campbell, Jr. (Debra) of Steadman, NC, and Alan S. Campbell of Fayetteville, NC; three step-sons: Robert, Josh and Chris Hertel; five grandchildren: Eric, Brian, Brook, Brittany and Seay; four great-grandchildren; a brother, Talmedge D. Campbell of Greer, SC; a sister, Mott Hill of Greer, SC; his companion, Faye Tavel of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and her sons: Alan and Ed Tavel and their families.
