Denton Marion Goodwin, 90, of Mt. Pleasant, SC formerly of Wilmington, NC and Newton, Massachusetts passed away on Thursday, November 17, 2011. The family will greet friends at the funeral chapel on Saturday, November 19, 2011, beginning at 11:00 a.m., followed by a chapel service at 12 noon. ARRANGEMENTS BY J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. Burial will follow at a later date in Calvary Waltham Cemetery in Newton, MA.
Mr. Goodwin was born on April 30, 1921 in Hobucken, North Carolina, son of the late Theodore Goodwin and Lorena Caravan Goodwin. He retired as a municipal employee for the City of Newton, MA.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He was on the original crew of the USS Quincy, participated in the invasion of Normandy; and witnessed the signing of the Peace Treaty marking the surrender of Japan in Tokyo Bay. While on the USS Quincy, his ship transported President Roosevelt and Winston Churchill from Newport, VA to the Suez Canal to the Yalter Conference (sometimes called the Crimea Conference) and then on to the Pacific.
He is survived by his son, Dennis Goodwin of Framingham, MA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Goodwin, and his later companion, Mabel Bynum. Denton is also survived by his guardian, Dottie Mayes of Mt. Pleasant, SC, who helped him during his later years.
