Demetre Speros Homer "Deme", 50, of Charleston, SC, son of the late Arthur and Christina Homer entered into eternal rest Saturday, August 19, 2017. His funeral service will be held Friday, August 25, 2017 in the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, 30 Race Street at 11:00 am. Private family Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Deme was born on July 3, 1967. The youngest of three children, Deme spent his early childhood in Greece, moving back to Charleston in 1973. He graduated from Bishop England High School, and went on to Georgetown University receiving an undergraduate degree in Language and Linguistics where he became fluent in five languages. He then graduated from Thunderbird University in Arizona and received a Master's Degree in Global Management with an emphasis in Linguistics. After graduating from Thunderbird, he worked in New York City and Washington D.C.
In 1999, he became an employee of SAIC, one of the nation's largest security technology firms as a Communications Principal. SAIC brought him to live and work in his beloved Greece where he became part of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games' security team. A dedicated parishioner of The Holy Trinity, he was a member of the Order of AHEPA, Plato Chapter 4 and the Male Choir. From a young age, Deme was known for his love of Greek dancing and heritage. His passion for the arts, music, and theater took him to the Charleston Stage where he performed in several musicals such as Annie, Fiddler on the Roof, and Man of La Mancha.
He is survived by two sisters, Alexis H. Glover (Cregg) and Georgia H. Darby (John) both of Mount Pleasant; his nieces and nephews JC Darby (Susannah), Christina Glover, Arthur Darby, Alexander Glover, Litsa Darby, and Andrew Glover; and his dear dog, Pepi.
"Mimo" will be dearly missed by his nieces and nephews affectionately known as the "Six Pack", and by all who enjoyed his quick wit, sharp tongue, and fashionable style. Mimo taught us all a valuable lesson, "it's not the load that breaks you down, it's the way you carry it". Although his final resting place is in Charleston, his heart will forever lay in Greece. May his memory be eternal.
Memorials may be made to the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity Endowment Fund, 30 Race Street, Charleston, SC 29403 or to the MUSC Living Donor Institute: Division of Transplant Surgery, PO Box 250613, Charleston, SC 29425.
