Della Gibbs Stewart passed away this past Monday, March 19th, in her South Carolina home after a short battle with cancer. There will be a Memorial Service on Saturday, March 31st at 2:00 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road, SC. There will be a reception immediately following the memorial service at the Villas at Charleston Park Clubhouse, 8800 Dorchester Road, North Charleston, SC 29420.
Born January 29, 1934 in Buchanan, Michigan, she was one of eight children of Clarence Gibbs and Margerite Butcher Gibbs. Mrs. Stewart earned a bachelor's of science degree in Chemistry from Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, MI in 1955 and in 1957 a certificate in medical technology from South Bend Medical Foundation, South Bend, Indiana. In 1971 she earned her Master's of Education degree from Loyola University of Chicago. Mrs. Stewart was a school teacher in the Consolidated Evanston Public School District 65 from 1974-1987. She also served as an associate professor from 1970-1972 at the University of Illinois Chicago Medical Center.
Her husband of 52 years, Paul Robeson Stewart, preceded her in death on November 11, 2011. Della is survived by her son, Brett (Heidi); grandson, Sterling; brother, Richard Gibbs (Bertha); sisters: Elaine Layer, Sharon Ayers (Ray), Debra English (Carl), Pamela Haynes (John), and Patricia Woodford (Robert). Della was also preceded in death by her sister Yvonne Williams. Della was a beautiful soul and will be deeply missed by all her family and friends. We are thankful that she may now rest in peace.
