Debra Walker Chavis

Debra Walker Chavis, 70, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, joined her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, October 31, 2023. Her memorial Service will be held Sunday, November 19, 2023 in the Sullivan's Island Baptist Church, 1753 Central Avenue at 2:30 pm, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.

 

Debbie was born August 8, 1953 in Aurora, Colorado, daughter of the late William Earl Walker and the late Patricia Virginia Hayes Walker.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Presbyterian Church. 

 

Debbie loved dancing, music, theater, shopping, traveling, and game nights with friends.  She was happiest at the beach and found joy in the beauty of all of God’s creations. Her grandchildren were her heart and she relished being such an integral part of their lives. Debbie loved Jesus, living in the word of God and was known to go to multiple church services on any given Sunday! She volunteered in many capacities, from ushering performances in Charleston theaters to cleaning refuge at beach sweeps.

 

Debbie was an early education teacher, with a bachelor’s from Winthrop University and master's from University of South Carolina. She taught tirelessly in the Lexington District II school system for thirty years before retiring to the Charleston area.

 

Debbie is survived by her daughter, Ashley Chavis Cashon (Richard) of Mount Pleasant, SC, grandsons, Walker and Hayes; her son, Adam Heath Chavis (Heather) of Cameron, SC, grandson Troy and granddaughter Emma; their father, Troy James Chavis, Jr; her brother Eric Hayes Walker (Sheila) of Auburn, GA and many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
