Captain David Nash Planton, USNR (Retired), 85, husband of Norma "Vonnie" Reid Planton of Mount Pleasant, SC, passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2010. The relatives and friends of Captain David Planton are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Friday, August 6, 2010 in J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the Mount Pleasant Chapel one hour prior to the service. Captain Planton was born January 29, 1925 in Girard, Ohio and was the son of the late Grover and Marguerite Planton. He was a graduate of Marquette University obtaining a bachelor's degree in Naval Science. He was a Lieutenant in the United States Navy and served on the cruiser, USS Cleveland and minesweeper, Magpie, during World War II in the Pacific Theater. In 1950, he became a Special Agent for the Naval Investigative Service, serving in several stations around the nation and overseas. While serving in the Philippines, the unit which he supervised was given the task of processing the 25,000 boat refugees after the fall of South Vietnam. His unit was given high commendation for their efforts. He retired in 1975. He met the love of his life, Vonnie, in Jacksonville, Florida and they were married in 1946. He was a self taught musician, singer, writer, sculptor, magician, cartoonist and an avid golfer and sports fan. His sense of humor captivated people wherever he went. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Norma "Vonnie" Planton of Mt. Pleasant, SC; three children, daughter, Pam P. Schwacke, and her husband, Buddy, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, son, Rick Planton and his wife, Sharon, of Ranlo, NC, and son, Phil Planton and his wife, Kathie, of Charleston, SC; seven grandsons, Michael Tucker, Scott Tucker, Aaron Planton, Jason Planton, Jonathan Planton, Ryan Planton and Drew Planton and a granddaughter, Caryn Winstead; and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jan P. O'Neil and a grandson, David Christian. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to The Smile Train, P.O.
