David Brooks Simmons, 81, of Awendaw, SC, husband of Karen Welden Simmons, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2017. His family will host a Gathering of Friends on Sunday, May 7, 2017 from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. David's Memorial Service will be held Monday, May 8, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. at Stuhr's Mount Pleasant Chapel.
David was born September 17, 1935 in Jackson, TN, son of the late William Lowell Simmons and the late Lois Virble Brooks Simmons.
David started his career in Caruthersville, MO as a radio DJ then moved to Alberta, Canada and Cheboygan, MI where he worked for PandG and the local TV station. Ansley Bubs Cohen brought him to Charleston, SC to work at WQSN. He held two jobs including one as a hair stylist at Farah's Beauty School. He then moved to on air talent at WCBD TV. After a short period he saw his future in Advertising and Production starting David Simmons Advertising. Locally he began his career with Charleston Lincoln Mercury (Old Weird Harold) and Doschers. The Michael J. Bloom Agency out of New York brought him in as the National Spokesman for IBM, Interstate Securities, Bayer Aspirin, Shakespeare Rod and Reels, AT&T, Wall Street Journal, Canada Dry, Stokely Brothers, Golf Digest and many more. He continued with Palmetto Ford and over a hundred Automotive Dealerships nationwide. Locally he is remembered as Mama's Boy with Mama's Used Cars at Palmetto Ford.
In addition to his loving wife, best friend and soulmate Karen, he is survived by five children, Cathy Tousley (Jim) of Elmira, MI, Michael Simmons (Helen) of Wasilla, AK, Chris Simmons (Margaret), Braxton Crim, and Alexandra Crim, all of Mount Pleasant, SC; two brothers, Bill Simmons (Cynthia) of Eustis, FL and Richard Simmons (Marge) of Byhalia, MS; and five grandchildren, Brooks Simmons, Andrew Simmons, Park Simmons, Courtney Greenlee, Clinton Tousley and Chad Tousley.
He is pre-deceased by wives Lynne and Julie and his step-father, John Graifemberg.
