David Clarence Race, 83, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 13, 2014 and joined his beloved wife, Helen Jean Weisent Race who passed away in January 2014. His Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, September 18, 2014 in the Reed Funeral Home, 705 Raff Road SW, Canton, OH. Interment will follow in Sunset Hills Memory Gardens, 7920 Frank Road NW, Canton, OH. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 17, 2014 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Reed Funeral Home, Canton, OH. Local arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
David was born January 9, 1931 in Canton, OH, son of the late Lorin C. Race and Myrtle Biller Race. He went to Fairmont Children's Home at the age of 10 and then went into farming at age 13. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having faithfully served in Panama from 1948 until 1952. David was a retired steel worker after 44 years with Republic Storage Systems. He was a past member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Canton, OH. Above all, he loved his family and enjoyed living a simple life and was looking forward to the birth of his first great-grandchild in October.
He is survived by his daughter, Janie (Clair) Jaberg of Mount Pleasant, SC; two granddaughters, Lauren (Chris) Sigler of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Julie (Ryan) Nowicki of Lakewood, OH; three brothers, Carl Race of Hartville, OH, Ronald Race of Canton, OH, and Eddie Race of South Carolina; and his sister, Helen Race of Louisville, OH. He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Clyde Race, Kathryn Barkley, Margie Mouer, Herman Culler, Rosemary Bennett, and Robert Race.
