David Parlman, 81, of Isle of Palms, passed away January 7 at his home on the Isle of Palms, in the company of loved ones.

David Bruce Parlman was born April 29, 1944 in Hudson, New York to William and Hilda Parlman. Throughout his life, he maintained strong bonds with his siblings Ronnie, Billy, Larry and Nancy.

In 1962, David joined the Navy, serving on an East Coast Mine Sweeper. This would serve two important purposes in his life… to give him the mechanical knowledge he would parlay into a successful business of installing underground tanks, and more importantly, the ship’s port city of Charleston would become the Lowcountry in which he would thrive, both personally and professionally. His first business was B & D Environmental. David was the go-to installer of underground tanks for hospitals, gas stations, and many major commercial facilities in the Charleston area. He sold B & D, and he and Margaret moved to North Carolina for a short time. He was pulled back to the Lowcountry to begin a similar business, David Environmental, which he would continue to grow until his retirement in 2015.

David was universally respected and well liked for many reasons by people from all walks of life. He was a true bellwether for what was honest and correct. He rarely gave unsolicited advice, but didn’t mince words on the truth when asked for his opinion. He had a tremendous sense of humor, a huge heart, and a quick laugh (with a snort if you were lucky) . He was also a plethora of knowledge of everything from sports, to how something worked or why something was a certain way. “Ask David” was a frequently heard sentence around people who knew him. He was a fun, interesting person whose glass was usually full, both literally and figuratively.

He loved traveling and achieved his bucket list of visiting all 50 states with his wife Margaret. They treasured their Thanksgiving holidays with family in New York year after year. He enjoyed his junkets with his friends Stevie, Danny, David H, Hoyt, and Steve E. He enjoyed boating with the Dudley family, his Early Times, grilling, oyster roasts, clam roasts, football, NASCAR, gardening and yard work.

More than anything else, David loved his devoted wife of 44 years, Margaret, and his extended families in Charleston and New York. His survivors include his wife Margaret Parlman of Isle of Palms, SC; daughter, Nancy Parlman Heide of Mt. Pleasant, SC; grandson, Michael D. Heide of Eugene, OR; and two great grandchildren, Addison D. Heide and David C. Heide. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson Christpher A. Heide and both of his siblings.

One of his favorites sayings was “It’s been a great one”. Yes, indeed it has. Thank you David.

His Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, January 15, 2026 at Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 322 Middle St., Sullivan's Island, SC 29482 at 2:00 pm. Interment with military honors will follow at Mt. Pleasant Memorial Gardens, followed by a reception at The Windjammer.
