David Jeffrey Leibowitz, 74, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, died Saturday, July 15, 2017. His graveside service will be held, Thursday, July 20, 2017 in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens, 1308 Mathis Ferry Road, Mt. Pleasant at 10:00 AM. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL.
David was born April 1, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York, son of the late Joel, and Hilda (Reiss) Leibowitz. He grew up in Queens, New York, and graduated from Queens College in New York City. David received a National Science Foundation Grant, which funded his Master's Degree in Math Education, obtained in 1970 at Yeshiva University. He taught middle and high school mathematics from 1965-1976, in the New York City Public School System. Among his proudest achievements was he his coaching of math students who became finalists in the National Science Talent Search, later known as the Intel Challenge. In 1976, he joined his father's Manhattan business in Office Supplies, and Printing. He remained in that business for thirty years. Following his move to the Charleston area in 2004, he began tutoring students in mathematics. In 2006, he joined the Mathematics Department at the College of Charleston, and served as a dedicated Professor of Statistics for the past eleven years. He married in 1980, and raised two children: Emily, and Michael in Manhattan, New York, and Shelburne, Vermont. David was a: fun loving father and loyal friend to many. He was known for his great sense of humor, generosity, and friendliness. He derived great pleasure from bringing joy into other people's lives, that is what made him happiest. He loved his job, and the college staff was like an extended family to him. Among his favorite activities were tennis, swimming, going to the beach, and going to Ye Old Ice Cream, down the street. He was a big fan of oldies music and nostalgia. He is survived by his daughter Emily, of Mount Pleasant South Carolina, and his son Michael, of Burlington, Vermont.
