David August Heins

David August Heins passed away on March 29, 2023 at age 51. He was Dave to his friends, and David to his family, who could never quite let go of his full name. He was the first grandchild to Mildred “Mema” Horner, oldest child of Kaye and Erwin Heins, and older brother to Amy and Jonathan.

As the oldest, David held a special role in the family. He was the first grandson on his father’s  side, and the first grandchild on his mother’s side, sharing a birthday with Mema, his grandmother. David was rightfully proud of his military service, being the first in the family to go into the Army, and a proud member of the 2/75th Ranger Regiment, where he earned the Army Commendation Medal.   He touched lives all over the country, from Washington state to Virginia and his home here in Charleston.

David loved old school punk, Star Wars (original series please), the Clemson Tigers and Chicago Cubs, fighting with his cousin over pickled okra every Christmas, his pool team, and Iron Maiden. He was a fixture in downtown Charleston, having worked in many restaurants over the years before settling at A.C.’s Bar and Grill, working with his best friend feeding burgers to hungry law students and the Upper King Street community.

David is deeply mourned by his family, his friends, and his girlfriend of several years, Joie Gilkison. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 on April 11, 2023 at Stuhr’s Funeral Home on Calhoun Street, downtown Charleston. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am, Beaufort National Cemetery, April 12, 2023.

Memorials may be made to Water Mission, 1150 Molly Greene Way, Bldg 1605, North Charleston, SC 29405 www.watermission.org.

Rangers lead the way.
