David W. Hartkemeyer passed away peacefully after a short illness, February 4, 2012 at the Hospice Center of the Hospice of Charleston.
Mr. Hartkemeyer was born January 5, 1945 in Vinton, Iowa; the son of the late Alfred and Helen Bascom Hartkemeyer. After high school he served our country for 20 years as a member of the US Navy. He then worked for 27 years for the College of Charleston as inventory manager and ran a newspaper route for the Post and Courier for 20 years. He retired full time in 2005 to live a more peaceful job of camping and fishing.
Surviving are his beloved daughter, Lynn Laney and her husband Keath of Moncks Corner and Bobby Adkins long time companion and partner of Bonneau. David has two grandsons Drew Laney and Kraig Laney of Moncks Corner whom he loved with all his heart.
Two step-sons: Fred Adkins (Roberta) of Summerville and Michael Adkins (Teresa) of Columbia and three step-grandchildren: Sharidan, Thomas and JonAllen.
He has one brother, Richard Hartkemeyer (Valerie) of West Union, Iowa; two sisters: Elaine Gamache of Jacksonville, FL and Eileen Schanbacher (John) of Atkins, Iowa and many nieces and nephews.
David loved life and had many friends, but Beth and Tommy Spinharney of Summerville, Marion "Mac" Reeves of Bonneau and Carl "Bill" Bailey of Bonneau were very special and dear to him.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 10:00am on Monday, February 6, 2012 at J. HENRY STUHR, NORTHWOODS CHAPEL, 2180 Greenridge Road, North Charleston.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice Center of Hospice of Charleston, 676 Wando Park Blvd., Mt. Pleasant, SC 29464.
