David Samuel Harris

David Samuel Harris, Jr., 91, husband of Dora Fogle Harris of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, July 6, 2011.  The relatives and friends of David Harris, Jr. are invited to attend his Funeral Service on Saturday, July 9, 2011, in Ashley River Baptist Church at 2:00 p.m.  Burial will follow in Live Oak Memorial Gardens.  The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 9, 2011, at the church one hour prior to the service. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL. David was born on June 2, 1920, in Handsom, Virginia, son of the late David Samuel Harris, Sr. and Eva Mae Woolard Harris.  He served in the United States Army during WWII.  He was employed as a Comptroller by Swift & Co., for more than 45 years.  David was extremely active in the life of Ashley River Baptist Church, having joined in September 1946.  He served the church in a variety of positions, such as a Sunday School Teacher for the young adults 1946-1957; Treasurer 1957-1977; and was on the Board of Deacons for a number of years, having served as Chairman from 1973-1974. He was Sunday School Teacher for the Senior Adults from 1977 to 1992.  In honor of his leadership of that class, it was renamed The David S. Harris Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Dora F. Harris of Mt. Pleasant, SC; four children, Cathy H. Samuels and her husband, Keith, of Pensacola, FL, Connie H. Snyder and her husband, Jim, of Charleston, SC, David "Chip" Harris and his wife, Lynn, of Rock Hill, SC, and Brian Harris and his wife, Kim, of Deerfield, IL; five grandchildren, Dawn S. Rockey and her husband, John, Donna Harris, Jonathan Harris and his wife, Marissa, Sgt. Nathan Harris and his wife, Jennifer, and Dana Harris; two great grandchildren, Katie Rockey and Caroline Rockey; brother, James Ray Harris and his wife, Faye, of Greenville, NC, and many nieces and nephews. David was predeceased by his older brother, Paul Woolard Harris.  Flowers will be accepted, or the family requests memorials be made in David's memory to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, c/o Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC  29407 or Hospice of Charleston Foundation, 676 Wando Park Boulevard, Mt. Pleasant, SC  29464.
