David Delee Clayton, Sr., 82, of North Charleston, SC, died Monday, September 15, 2014. His funeral service will be held Thursday, September 18, 2014 in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road at 2:00 pm. Interment with military honors will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 17, 2014 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm in Stuhr's Northwoods Chapel.
David was born October 15, 1931 in Ridgeville, SC, son of the late Rippen (Pat) Hampton Clayton and the late Reba Bailey Clayton Hurtt. As a member of the US Marine Corps David qualified as a marksman and worked in aircraft maintenance during the Korean War. His civil service career spanned 33 years and he retired as the Superintendent of Ship Fitter Shop 11 at the Charleston Naval Shipyard. David was a member of Wando Woods Baptist Church where he was active in the Senior Citizens group. He was a life time member of VFW Post 3142 and also a member of NARF. During the 1950s David was a volunteer fire fighter in Charleston Heights.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude "Trudy" Clayton; son, David D. Clayton, Jr. both of North Charleston, SC; daughter, Sherri Clayton Ranta and her husband Jeffrey of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, Matthew David Clayton, Ashley Shannon Ranta, Joshua Clayton Ranta; brother, Clyde H. Clayton and his wife Eleanor of North Charleston, SC; two sisters, Nell C. Dearman of Arlington, TX and Mary "Pat" E. Seabrook and her husband Ephraim "Ephie" of Cape May, NJ; step brother, Kevin Hurtt and his wife Juanita of North Charleston, SC.
