David Chester
Carroll
April 7, 1951 – March 21, 2026
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of David Chester Carroll. He was born as one of six children to Chester John Gutowski and Lottie Dorothy Gutowski (née Shepka) April 7th, 1951 in Cleveland, Ohio and departed March 21st, 2026 in his final home in Charleston, South Carolina. He is survived by his adoring wife Kim, three siblings, four children, three grandchildren, a lifetime of friends and endless people who were blessed by his guidance and service to others.
This obituary ought to come with a scratch-and-sniff section under David’s name that would emit the scent of cigar smoke, or perhaps black licorice. He was a man with the intention of seeing life through in a way he pleased. In addition to a successful career in industrial sales, he lived as an entrepreneur who created several business ventures and helped others in that same field as a business broker, and is probably angling for a position as a heavenly realtor as this obituary is being written.
A sports lover and fierce competitor, he brought passion and determination to everything he did, whether on the golf course, the tennis courts, or tackling a project in the yard. He took pride in the details, in doing things well, and in creating a space that reflected care, effort, and love.
Dave understood that you both have and make family. He lived his later years in a life of sobriety and helped countless others on the road to recovery from addiction. He opened his home to all, and, as long as you could put up with some teasing, you would always find in him a mentor, a friend, a man who would do right by you.
He lived a full and remarkable life—one where he beat the odds more than once and never lost his spirit. In the end, he passed peacefully in his sleep, a man deeply loved and leaving behind stories, laughter, and memories that will never fade. There will never be another person like him and his presence will be dearly missed.
His Funeral Service will be held Thursday, March 26, 2026 at the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 4:00 pm. The family will receive friends Thursday at the chapel an hour before the service.
