David Arthur Brockinton junior, 97, trial lawyer of Charleston, South Carolina, for 70 years, died peacefully at home Sunday morning, November 1, 2015.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend: Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 4 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at J. Henry Stuhr, Downtown. His Funeral Service will be held Thursday, November 5, 2015 at 1 p.m. at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, 53 Meeting Street; Interment, Magnolia Cemetery. A Celebration of Mr. Brockinton's Life will be held afterwards at 3 p.m. at 129 South Battery, Charleston, SC 29401. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr Inc., Downtown Chapel.
Mr. Brockinton was born October 23, 1918 in Charleston, South Carolina, son of the late David Arthur Brockinton and Annie Franklin Harvey. He was educated at The Craft School, the old High School of Charleston, and the College of Charleston, graduating magna cum laude in 1940, majoring in Latin and Greek and minoring in English and German. He was a member and Worthy Master of his Fraternity at the College of Charleston, Alpha Tau Omega. He served in the Navy during World War II as a Lieutenant in the Pacific. He received his law degree from the University of Virginia. Brocky, as he was fondly known, was actively engaged in the practice of law in the Brockinton family law firm since 1945 until his recent retirement, specializing in admiralty and libel law. He was legal counsel for The Post Courier for over 40 years. He was a member and former President of the Charleston County Bar Association; The South Carolina Bar Association; The American Bar Association; The American College of Trial Lawyers; Honorary Fellow of The Litigation Council of America; Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel; The Charleston Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow of The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International; The Charleston Club; The New England Society; The South Carolina Society; The St. Cecelia Society; The Country Club of Charleston; and a long time member of the Carolina Yacht Club. He was a former Elder and the longest living member of First (Scots) Presbyterian Church. He served as legal counsel and trustee for Charleston Atlantic Presbytery.
Mr. Brockinton was predeceased by his wife, Alta Maree Massey Brockinton of Mountain Brook, Alabama to whom he was married for over 56 years until her death in December, 2001. He is survived by his two daughters; Alta Maree Brockinton of New York City and Anne Rutledge Brockinton Lee (Robert M.) of Lake Tahoe, Nevada; a granddaughter, Alta Hagan Thorne and two great-granddaughters, Honoré Leigh Brockinton Thorne and Ariana Marie Kempner Thorne, all of London, England; a younger sister, Franklin Brockinton Stone, of Richmond, VA; and numerous nieces and nephews as well as wonderful nurses and caregivers.
