Darelyn “Lynn” Minard Marshall passed away on December 7, 2025, in Charleston, South Carolina, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 83.

Born on September 28, 1942, in Flint, Michigan, she was the eldest of five daughters of Lt. Col. Darrell George Minard, an Air Force pilot, and Catherine Cuthbertson Minard. She was a military kid whose father was often away flying missions during WWII, the Berlin Airlift, and the Korea and Vietnam wars. She grew up in Germany and San Antonio, Texas before moving to the Low Country in her teens and making South Carolina her home for most of the rest of her life.

A majorette for the Fighting Green Wave of Summerville, she earned a voice scholarship to Coker College, married and later divorced her high school classmate, Richard C. Harrill. As a single mother, she went back to work, managing the offices of both a burn surgeon as well as an ophthalmologist at the Medical University of South Carolina, later meeting and marrying Dr. Joseph "Neil" Marshall, a neurologist at the Medical University of South Carolina. They were together for nearly 50 years. They blended their families and together with their five children spent the 1970s on the beaches of Kiawah, reading paperbacks, beach-combing for shells, body-surfing with the kids and riding ATVs. The 1980s were spent living on Orange Street in historic Charleston; and then from 1990 to 2017 Lynn, Neil and their dogs moved out to a beautiful home on Edisto Island that they designed together. Each stage of their lives together was marked by a love of the tides and of fine dining.

Family was the through-line of her life, and Lynn is remembered with overwhelming love and affection by her five children: Elayne Harrill Cason, Catherine Harrill Hickenbottom, Richard Caldwell Harrill Jr., and her two stepsons Edward Owsley Marshall and Ian Yandell Marshall. She raised strong, independent, resilient children, with many advanced degrees and the confidence to explore the world and lead successful careers. Her presence lives on in her grandchildren: Gerald Alexander "Alec" Moore, Sarah Catherine Moore, Darelyn Shelby Cason - her namesake - Rose Elizabeth Harrill, Lauren Marshall, Will Marshall, David Marshall, Josie Hickenbottom, and Connor Hickenbottom. .

Lynn shared a lifelong bond with her sisters—Cindy Minard Finucan, Cathy Minard Mead, Debbie Minard Wilhite, and Nancy Minard Bowie—and also held dear the relationships with her sons- and daughters-in-law: Richard Scott Hickenbottom, Katie Jamieson, Susan Marshall, and Jill Marshall.

Lynn’s nurturing spirit found expression in the gardens she lovingly tended, and the gourmet meals she prepared with devotion. Lynn also loved her dogs with all her heart: they weren’t just pets, but loyal companions who filled her days with joy, comfort, and unconditional love. Lynn loved to laugh, and had a keen sense of humor. She always put family, and her dogs, first and loved bringing everyone together over meals and conversation. Raise a glass to her, and hold her in your heart.
