Darel Cooper Hurley, 76, of Charleston, SC, husband of Ann Stewart Cario-Hurley, entered into eternal rest Saturday, March 30, 2013. A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, April 3, 2013, in John Wesley United Methodist Church, 626 Savannah Highway, at 10:00 am. Interment, at a later date in Fayetteville, NC. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 pm in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway.
Darel was born at home on August 12, 1936 in Halifax, North Carolina, son of the late Reverend John Bascom Hurley and Daisy Fuqua Hurley. He was a retired banker, a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of John Wesley United Methodist Church and the Chancel Choir. Darel was a past president of the Lions Club in Lillington, NC, a member and leader of many other civic and church organizations, an avid sports enthusiast and a loyal fan of the UNC Tarheels.
He is survived by his wife of Charleston; three sons, James B. Hurley of Charleston, Michael C. Hurley of Belmont, NC and Scott P. Hurley of Waxhaw, NC; a daughter, Lou Ann Hurley Kelly of Charleston; a step-son, Thomas C. Cario of Charleston; a step-daughter, Melissa C. Parrish of Charleston; two brothers, Bob Hurley of North Myrtle Beach and Bill Hurley of Fayetteville, NC; a sister, Doris McKellar of Jackson, NC; fifteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruby Celestine "Tina" Plummer Hurley and a sister, Juanita Page.
