Dan was born September 18, 1960 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, son of the late Daniel Palko and the late Lucille Palko. He was a graduate of Bloomsburg University and the Naval Post Graduate School and proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 29 years. Dan completed Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy Supply Corps. During his early career, he was particularly proud of his service on the USS INDIANAPOLIS (SSN-697) at Pearl Harbor, HI, completing multiple deployments as the Supply Department Head and Diving Officer. During this tour, he earned his dolphins as qualified in Submarines. Subsequent assignments included Supply Officer of the USS SIMON LAKE (AS 33) Holy Loch, Scotland; Defense Distribution Depot Cherry Point, NC; US Joint Forces Command, Washington D.C.; Naval Inventory Control Point Mechanicsburg / Philadelphia, PA where he was promoted to Captain; and the Trident Refit Center, Kings Bay, GA. Dan’s active duty awards included the Legion of Merit (2), Defense Meritorious Service Medal (3), and numerous expeditionary and unit commendation awards. After his retirement in November 2011, he served with distinction at the Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic.
Dan enjoyed cooking for friends and family, was an avid golfer, dedicated to his faith, and made it a priority to put others first. As the life of the party, Dan could always bring a smile and the occasional eye roll. He served as a mentor and friend to many in the community, but most importantly, was the backbone of his family; a dedicated husband of 38 years, father, and G-Pa to his three grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Amanda Miller (Brad) of North Charleston, SC; son, Brian Palko (Evelyn) of Mechanicsburg, PA; three grandchildren, Eloise, Madeline and Landon; brother, David Palko (Wendy) of Sugarloaf, PA; three sisters, Diana Martuscelli (Bob) of Drums, PA, Debbie Kaschak (Mark) of Drums, PA and Dorie Palko of Drums, PA; father-in-law, John Martini; and mother-in-Law, Anne Martini.
