Daniel Jules Lerner

Daniel Jules “Dan” Lerner died December 26, 2024, after a brief, but brave battle with cancer. He was 78.

Dan was born in New York City on June 15, 1946. After a rough beginning to college, Dan enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1966. He served three tours in Vietnam earning numerous commendations and awards. Dan extended his duty to return to the States for his lifelong friend, Bruce’s wedding. Dan remained a proud Marine throughout his life. Semper Fi!

Shortly after returning from Vietnam with the rank of Sergeant, Dan met his wife, Susan, at a local Jewish Community Center in the Bronx. He soon found that education was more important to him than he recognized. He obtained his master’s degree and became a teacher. Dan, Susan, and their son Scott settled down in Maryland. Dan taught middle school science for 38 years, challenging young people and organizing the annual science fair.

After the unfortunate loss of his son and his wife, both of whom he lovingly nursed in their final illnesses, Dan moved to Virginia Beach. There, he met his current partner, Rosalyn, moved to Charleston and adopted her family and grandchildren as his own. He was an active member of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim and sang in the choir.

Dan was innately kind and exceedingly generous.

He is survived by his life partner, Rosalyn Kramer Monat-Haller, and her sons and grandchildren; nephew, Jonathan, niece, Lisa; and his fur children, Misha and Shalom. He was predeceased by his wife, Susan; son Scott; brother, Jerry Lerner; and fur child, Bogie.

His funeral service will be held graveside Sunday, December 29, 2024 in Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Cemetery, Huguenin Avenue at 11:00 am with Marine Corps military honors. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kramer Religious School Fund, c/o KKBE, 90 Hasell Street, Charleston, SC 29401 or to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
