Daniel Elliott Huger, Jr., husband of Katherine Middleton Huger, died on May 14, 2015 at Bishop Gadsden. A Celebration of Life service will be held in Charleston at the time of his birthday in September.He was born in New York City on September 23, 1928. He was the son of Daniel Elliott Huger and Elizabeth Kress Huger Jack. He was predeceased by his parents, his stepfather, Raymond Harvey Jack, and his sister, Beatrice Kress Huger Payne. He graduated from St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire in 1946 and from Harvard University in 1950. He received his law degree from the University of Virginia and held an additional law degree from Yale University. He was drafted into the Marine Corps during the Korean War and served his country in the U. S. and Japan for two years. After law School, Danny lived in Heidelberg Germany for several years, working as a civilian on many military bases. During those years he traveled widely in Europe and climbed the Matterhorn not once, but twice. When he returned to the United States, he worked as a trust officer in the trust departments of Citicorp in New York, South Carolina National Bank in Charleston and finally at Old Colony Trust Company in Boston Massachusetts where he met his wife. Danny returned to live in Charleston in 1970 and practiced law at 7 Broad Street until he retired in 1999. Buckfield Plantation at Pocotaligo, South Carolina where his parents had a winter home, was a center of family activities for much of Danny's life. He loved reading, tennis and sailing, and had a special passion for classical jazz and the blues. All who knew him enjoyed his company. A natural story teller, he had a gift for making his friends laugh. He is remembered for his kindness, wit, gentle nature and generous spirit. He was a member of the Carolina Yacht Club, The Society of the Cincinnati of the state of South Carolina and the Society of Colonial Wars.He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Katherine Middleton Huger; his brother, Claude Kress Jack (Jean) of Rockport, Maine; nephew Howard Brent Payne (Sandy) of Wanganui, New Zealand; nephew Daniel Huger Scott Payne (Anna) of Marble Falls, Texas; niece Lisa Payne Johnston (Robert) of Hico, Texas; niece Claudia Jack Sutton (David) of Mill Valley, California; niece Carol Kress Jack of Mill Valley, California; niece Suzanne Elizabeth Jack of Mill Valley, California and 18 grandnieces and nephews.Memorial donations may be made to Bishop Gadsden, Resident Assistance Fund, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, S.C. 29412 or to The Society of the Cincinnati of the State of S.C., c/o Treasurer, P.O.
