Daniel Billen, 87, of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Gertrude Eleanor Berlin Billen died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, October 16, 2012. A private Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, October 18, 2012 in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens and a Celebration of Life Reception for friends and family will be held at Somerby of Mount Pleasant in Park West on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 1:00 pm. Mr. Billen was born November 27, 1924 in the borough of Manhattan in New York City. He graduated in 1948 from Cornell University with a B.S. in Microbiology. He received both his Masters and Ph.D. in Bacteriology from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. In his early years, he was a biologist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas. He became Professor of Biology at the University of Texas in Houston and then Professor of Radiation Biology at the University of Florida in Gainesville. In his later years, he became Director of University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and editor-in-chief of the international publication, Radiation Research. He was blessed to live a full and rich life and was much loved by his family.
He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Eleanor "Ellie" Berlin Billen of Mount Pleasant, SC; children, daughter, Robin M. Elder of Mount Pleasant, SC, daughter, Rhonda A. Patterson of Elk River, MN, and son, Jerry Billen of Greenwood, SC; three grandchildren, Harrison, Rachael, and Samantha.
