Creighton E. Likes

September 7, 1942 — November 27, 2021

Creighton Edward Likes, Jr. entered into eternal life on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at the age of 79.

Creighton was born on September 7, 1942 in Charleston, SC son of Fannie Belle Beckmann Likes and Brigadier General Creighton Edward Likes. He grew up in the Hampton Park area, was schooled in Charleston, became an Eagle Scout and graduated from Rivers High School in 1960. Creighton attended Presbyterian College where he was a member of Kappa Alpha Order and ROTC. He graduated in 1964. Following graduation, Creighton became a member of the Medical Service Corps and served in the Army 2nd Infantry Division in Korea. When he returned to Charleston in 1967, Creighton married Constance Diane Young at Second Presbyterian Church, his family church. He then continued his service to our country for two years as an Active Reservist and completed his service with the rank of Captain.

In 1968, Creighton went to work at the Medical University of South Carolina before going on to graduate school in the fall of 1970 at the Medical College of Virginia (now VCU). He received a Masters of Healthcare Administration in 1972 and promptly began a long and successful career in Hospital Administration.

Creighton spent many years with the Hospital Corporation of America including serving as a District Vice President. He returned to his beloved Charleston in 1991 to assume the role of CEO at Bon Secours/St. Francis Xavier Hospital, where he worked tirelessly to gain the Certificate of Need to move the hospital to its current West Ashley location. During his tenure at St. Francis, Creighton also served as President of the South Carolina Hospital Association.

Creighton was then called to the town of Lancaster, OH to serve as CEO of Fairfield Medical Center, a position he treasured. He had so many fond memories of those with whom he had the pleasure of working. He was forever grateful for how the community embraced a Southerner. In 2001, Creighton returned to Charleston for good to lead Roper Hospital, where he served as CEO until his retirement. Creighton was a past member of the Washington Light Infantry and the German Friendly Society.

He is survived by his wife, Constance Young Likes; his daughter, Chrissy Likes Zollweg (Josh); and his son, Dr. Creighton Edward Likes III (Christa). He is also survived by five grandchildren, his greatest joys in life: Jack, Lily, Carter, Creighton IV and Britton. Creighton was predeceased by his parents and two sisters: Harriet Ann Likes and Frances Likes Fayssoux.
