She was born in Limestone, Tennessee on August 2, 1912, the daughter of William Clay Bolton and Julia Swiney Bolton. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Charleston and taught Sunday School there for 25 years. She worked with her husband in the Leonard School of Music/Charleston Music Center along with the associated Charleston Youth Band for 43 years. She is known by many in the Charleston area who took music lessons at the school. Over the years that she worked at the music center, several hundred students came to know her. She felt that the students were as close as family and often spoke of them lovingly, recalling their names and the instruments they played. At her 100th birthday party in Charleston last year, approximately 100 relatives and friends gathered, and this included many of the old students from the Leonard School of Music. They continued to write, call and visit her in recent years while she was residing with her daughter in North Carolina. She received her last letter from a student and read it on the day she joined her Heavenly Father. She was loved by so many people and loved so many people.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Patrick Joseph Leonard, a son, Patrick Joseph Leonard, II and her parents and eight siblings. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Stockdale Howard and husband Bill of Fayetteville NC, her son, Daniel J. Leonard of Charleston, and her sister, Julia Stinson, of Houston, Texas. Her grandchildren include Michael Patrick Stockdale and wife Elke Stockdale, Daniel O'Lannerghty, Dr. Patrick W. Leonard, John Phillip Stockdale, Sean Leonard and wife Kelci Leonard. Great-grandchildren are Maralee Stockdale Barela and husband, Jason Barela, Evan and Laura Brennan O'Lannerghty. Her great-great grandchildren are Ryan Curry, Coralie and Karmen Barela. She had three very special daughters whom she loved dearly, Ann Magwood, Barbara Ball and Lynda Leonard, along with one special granddaughter, Bridget O'Lannerghty. She also leaves many loving nieces and nephews and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Leonard School of Music, now a non-profit organization, 3005 West Montague Avenue, North Charleston, SC 29418. According to one grandson, "The world is a dimmer place with her leaving but Heaven is somehow surely brighter, and she is reunited with the love of her life who we called Poppy".
