Conrad Angelo Zakis, a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and esteemed member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, passed away peacefully with his wife by his side on Saturday, June 6, 2026, in N. Charleston, South Carolina. He was 92 years old. Born on May 8, 1934, in Braddock, Pennsylvania, Conrad was the cherished son of the late Angelo Tzamouzakis and Alice Callas Tzamouzakis.
Conrad’s life was marked by dedication, service, and kindness. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgy and Materials Science from Carnegie Mellon University, displaying early on a keen intellect and commitment to excellence. He served his country proudly as a Sergeant in the United States Army and continued his service in the Army Reserves. In his professional career, Conrad contributed significantly through his work with US Steel Corporation in Pittsburgh and later at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, leaving behind a legacy of diligence and integrity.
A pillar of his community and faith, Conrad was devoted to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, where he was a faithful member for 42 years. Those who knew him remember his kind, loving, and gentle nature, accompanied always by a warm smile. Above all else, Conrad was a person who loved fiercely. His greatest joys in life was his family, his cherished circle of friends , and his beloved dogs.
Conrad is lovingly survived by his wife, Susan Marie Keddie Zakis, who stood by his side until the end. He leaves behind his children: Doreen Price (Tim), Dean Palestra (Lisa), and Lee Zakis (April), whose lives he enriched with his unwavering support and guidance. His legacy extends through his cherished grandchildren: Erin Maldonado (Jesse), Brandon Price (Drew), Caitlyn Zakis, Cole Zakis (Mercedes), Cade Palestra, Dalton Palestra, Sierra Cook (Zach), and Kayla Rozo (Juan). He was also a proud great-grandfather to Landon, Melanie, Teddy, Rory, Miles, Nolan, Teagen, and Conrad. His brother, Mal Zakis (Marie), also survives him, carrying forward the family's name.
Conrad was preceded in death by his beloved parents Angelo and Alice; his children, Dina Palestra and Shane Zakis; his granddaughter, Heather Zakis; and his sister, Karen Viaros.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Race Street, Charleston. The Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 11:00 am at the same church, followed by interment at Live Oak Memorial Gardens.
Conrad Angelo Zakis lived a life defined by devotion, love, and service. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who were fortunate to know him.
