CMSgt Glenn Alfred Sparks (USAF, Ret.)

Chief Master Sergeant Glenn Alfred Sparks, (USAF, Ret.) 77, of Johns Island, South Carolina, died Monday, January 15, 2018. His funeral service will be held on Sunday, January 21, 2018 in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road at 3:00 pm. Chief Sparks will be interred in Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia, SC with military honors on Monday, January 22, 2018 at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends in the Mount Pleasant Chapel on Sunday, January 21, 2018 from 1:00 until time of the service.

Chief Sparks was born January 31, 1940 in Ottaray, Union County, South Carolina, son of the late Hay Fant Sparks, Sr. and the late Josephine Hall Sparks. He was a graduate of Union High School and of Texas Lutheran University. He served 20 years and six months in the United States Air Force. Five years were served overseas. He was awarded four Meritorious Service Medals, two Air Force Commendation Medals, a National Defense Service medal and six good Conduct Medals. Chief Sparks was an honor graduate of the HQ USAF Command Non-commissioned Officers Academy in 1964 in Washington, DC, and a graduate of the inaugural class of the USAF Senior NCO Academy in Montgomery, AL.

Upon his retirement, Chief Sparks was employed by the America Security Life Insurance Company of San Antonio, Texas, a subsidiary of the American National Family of Companies, as the manager of their group insurance division. In 1990, he was transferred to the company's headquarters in Galveston, Texas, as an assistant vice president. He retired in 2004 as a corporate vice president and chief administrative officer of the multiple line division. He returned to South Carolina following his retirement and made his home in Columbia and Johns Island.

He is survived by his son, Glenn Alfred Sparks, Jr. (Deborah) of Bonaire, GA; two daughters, Sherry Lynn Sparks Moskal of Johns Island, SC and Kimberly Dawn Sparks of Flagler Beach, FL; two brothers, Hay Fant Sparks, Jr. (Mary) of Mt. Pleasant, SC and Frank Bruce Sparks (Kay) of Union, SC; seven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
