Clyde Calvin Allen, Jr.

Clyde Calvin Allen, Jr., 73, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Marianne Lofton Allen entered into eternal rest Tuesday, November 8, 2022. His Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 12, 2022, in the sanctuary at First Baptist Church of Charleston, 48 Meeting Street at 11:00 am. The family will receive friends an hour before the service. Private interment will be held at a later date at Christ Church Cemetery. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount Pleasant Chapel.

Clyde was born November 7, 1949, in Newberry, South Carolina, son of the late Clyde Calvin Allen, Sr. and the late Bessie Mae Mathis. Later in childhood, his family moved to Western North Carolina where he enjoyed car rides and exploring the Appalachian Mountains with family. He graduated from Tuscola High School in 1968 as salutatorian of his class.

Clyde then pursued higher education at Appalachian State University and graduated with a B.S. in Mathematics. He began his teaching career at Bethel Elementary School. Following his time in Bethel, NC he joined the Marines and, after being medically discharged, spent 8 years as Quartermaster First Class, in the Naval Reserves.

During this time, he felt the call of the Lord to ministry. In 1977, he earned his Master of Religious Education at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. He was a Minister of Education for 13 years and served in TN, MO, AL, and VA before settling in Charleston, SC.

In Charleston, he was a teacher and IT Manager for First Baptist School of Charleston for 26 years. As his call to ministry was very clear to him, he was also an Interim Pastor at several local Charleston County churches.

He will be remembered, first and foremost, for his love of the Lord and for his devotion to ministry. All who knew him will never forget his dry sense of humor and love of “dad jokes”. His family and close friends will forever cherish his immense love and adoration for his wife, Marianne.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marianne; two daughters, Allison Allen (Vernard) of Summerville, SC, Alexis Bednar (George) of Charleston, SC; son, Matthew Allen (Sarah) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and two grandchildren, Raomi and Miles Bednar. He was preceded in death by his parents.
