Cleveland Rufus Crosby

February 22, 1926 — October 18, 2013

Cleveland Rufus Crosby, 87, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Leona Maxey Crosby, entered into eternal rest Friday, October 18, 2013. His Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, October 23, 2013 in J. HENRY STUHR INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway at 2:00 pm. Entombment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel.

Mr. Crosby was born February 22, 1926 in Walterboro, South Carolina, son of Rufus Crosby and Grace Langdale Crosby. He served in the Navy during WWII aboard the USS Pittsburgh in South Pacific winning a Gold Battle Star, Golden Dragon, WWII Victory Metal, and a personal thank you from Admiral Forrestal. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a life member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Kilwinning Lodge 4. He was also a life member of the Elks Lodge and the Omar Shrine Temple participating in the Gold Wings. He retired from the Charleston Naval Shipyard, Shop 38 as a machinist. Mr. Crosby was a member of Northbridge Baptist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Jacqueline C. Rooke (Merrill Hanna) of Charleston, SC; his son, Cleveland Rufus Crosby Jr. of New York, NY; his sister, Miriam Weeks (Donnie) of Goose Creek, SC; two grandsons, Horace Scott Rooke and Dustin Tyler Rooke, both of Charleston, SC; and four very special nieces: Carole McDonald, Dixie Matics (Ozzie), Gloria Williams (Bob), and Barbara Evans (Pat).

Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children- Greenville, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville, SC 29605.
