Dr. Clay Welborn Evatt, Jr MD, 80, of Mount Pleasant, SC passed away on Thursday, Oct 27, 2011. The family will receive friends at the J. HENRY STUHR MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road on Saturday, October 29, 2011, from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Services will be private. Clay was born in Greenville, SC on April 16, 1931, son of the late Dr. Clay Welborn Evatt and Naomi Gartrell Evatt. A retired ophthalmologist, Clay was a graduate of Crafts School, Porter Military Academy, Davidson College and the Medical College of South Carolina. Dr. Evatt served as past vice-president of the Tri-State Medical Association, was active with the SC commission for the Blind, and the South Carolina Eyebank. He was a member of the St Andrews Society, the Rotary Club, Lions Club, Elks Club, and the Charleston Rifle Club. He is survived by his children Rebecca Evatt Frederick (Phil) of Johns Creek Ga; Benjamin Hall Evatt (Peggy) of Athens, Ga; Henry Mikell Evatt of Mt Pleasant; Lyla Evatt Hudson (Charles) of Johns Island, SC. He is also survived by six grandchildren; Kim and Ben Frederick, Rosalind Golob and Clay Evatt III; Lindsay and Rebecca Hudson ; his sister, Jane Evatt Hill and her husband Max; and by his former wife, Henrietta Evatt. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the "Evatt Medical Scholarship Fund" c/o Bethel United Methodist Church, 57 Pitt Street, Charleston SC 29401 or The Storm Eye Institute, 167 Ashley Avenue, Charleston SC, 29425.
