Entered into eternal rest on the evening of February 7, 2011, Chilton Hammond Cheves Johnson, first married to the late Henry Charles Cheves, III, and widow of Robert Eugene Johnson. Residence, Charleston, SC. The relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral services Friday, February 11, 2011 at 11:00 am in The Chapel at Bishop Gadsden. Friends may call at J. Mrs. Johnson was born September 18, 1923 in Annapolis, Maryland, the daughter of Captain Philip Huston Hammond, U.S.N. and Margaret Edwards Hammond. She grew up in a navy family living in numerous locations on the East Coast and the West Coast. While living in Long Beach, CA, she attended the Westlake School for Girls and Holmby Junior College. Mrs. Johnson also attended the College of Charleston and was a member of St. Philip's Episcopal Church, the Junior League of Charleston, the past president of the Ivy Garden Club, and a member of the Colonial Dames of South Carolina. She was a founder of Cabbage Row Shoppe, needlework and gift shop and a co-author of Flavored With Tradition, a favorite southeastern cookbook.
She is survived by one daughter: Chilton Cheves Pope and her husband Mark of Atlanta, Georgia; two sons: The Reverend Henry Middleton Cheves and his wife Susan of Edisto Island, South Carolina and Philip Hammond Cheves of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina; two stepsons: Randolph R. Johnson and his wife Becky of Darien, Connecticut, Steve Ranney and his wife Linda of Frederick, Maryland;one stepdaughter, Suzanne Marson; 15 grandchildren and step grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and step grandchildren; Mrs. Johnson is also survived by her former daughter-in-law, Pat Waring, sister-in-law, Leonora Cheves Brockinton (Sister) and her husband Harvey and many nieces and nephews.Three sisters predeceased her: Margaret Hammond Cook of Bristol, Rhode Island, Phyllis Hammond Howard of Alexandria, Virginia, and Jane Hammond Carter of Annapolis, Maryland. She was also predeceased by a stepdaughter and son-in-law Jean and Stephen Carpenter of Cleveland, Ohio.
