Cheves Harllee Ward

September 22, 1924 — July 6, 2010

Entered into eternal rest on the evening of July 6, 2010, Cheves Harllee Ward, husband of Lillian Stokes Ward. Residence, Charleston, SC.  The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Cheves Harllee Ward are invited to attend the funeral services of the former Saturday, July 10, at ten o'clock in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL. The burial will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery with Military Honors. Friends may call at Stuhr's Downtown Chapel Friday between five and seven o'clock.


Mr. Ward was born September 22, 1924 in Florence, SC, the son of Richard Edward Ward and Harriet Dixon Ward. He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II in the United States Navy.  He saw actions in many important battles, specifically Guadalcanal. It was his privilege to be a part of the honor flight visit to the World War II Memorial in Washington, DC last year.  He was a 1950 graduate of The University of South Carolina. An avid fisherman and hunter, Mr. Ward was a member of the Washington Hunting and Fishing Club at Mepkin Abbey.  He retired after thirty-seven years from sales with Wrenn Handling Industrial Equipment.


He is survived by his wife of Charleston, SC; one daughter: Debra Ward Fields (Kenneth) of Knoxville, TN; two grandchildren: Cheves Ryan Fields and Lauren Elizabeth Fields both of Knoxville, TN; one niece: Kathryn Ward Davis; two great nieces, one great nephew and cousins. He was predeceased by his brother Richard Dixon Ward and his nephew, Richard Dixon Ward, Jr.
