Charles B. "Chuck" Vickers, Sr., of James Island passed away on November 18, 2012 after a short illness at the age of 84. Chuck was born in Gainesville, Ga on December 30, 1927 to parents Charles Mundy Vickers and Eva Taylor Vickers.
Chuck has been married to his beloved wife Barbara Hayes Vickers, also from Gainesville, GA, for 63 years. They have four children, Chuck, Jr. (Linda), William (Andrea), Jeffrey and daughter Vicki Carney. They also have three grandchildren, Wendy, Christine and Caleb and two great grandchildren, Madison and Brooke. Chuck is also survived by his sister Margaret Miller (Lindburg) of Cumming, GA; aunt Nora Venson of Gainesville, GA; and cousin Selma Rich of Gainesville, GA. His extended family includes many nieces and nephews. His brother, Jerry Vickers, preceded him in death.
A graduate of Lyman Hall High School in Gainesville, GA, he earned his Juris Doctorate from Woodrow Wilson College of Law, Atlanta, GA. Chuck joined Lockeed Georgia in 1951 as a Tool Planning Trainee. He transferred to Project engineering supporting the Jetstar Project, the CD-141 and DC-5A Programs. In 1969, Chuck moved with his family to Charleston, SC to help establish the Adhesive Bond Plant. After a return-assignment in Marietta, Chuck joined Lockeed Missiles and Space Company in Charleston 1977. Chuck received recognition for his "dedication to thoroughness and cutting property control costs".
Since his retirement Chuck has assisted his wife Barbara with the crafting of vintage dolls and civil war items at the Charleston Market.
Over the years, Chuck has been active in professional and community activities. He was an organizer, former president and member of the East Marietta Georgia National Little League Club, as well as, past president of the James Island Optimist Club where he was recognized as "Optimist of the Year" in 1976. With his wife Barbara he had a strong passion for the prison ministry. Chuck has served as member of the Board of Directors of the Charleston Chapter of the National Management Association and served as its President in 1979/1980 and on the Director's Staff of the Omar Shrine Temple and was a Mason of the James Island Masonic Lodge #396 and Mariner Lodge #2. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Marietta, GA. Chuck was a member of York Rite Knights Templar. He was a member of General Ellis Capers Camp, The Sons of the Confederate Veterans and Elks Club Lodge #242.
Chuck was an active and faithful member and deacon of the Ashley River Baptist Church where he shared his love for the Lord with others. He had a true "green thumb", and with the Lords help, grew beautiful citrus fruit and vegetables in his garden for many years that he enjoyed giving to his friends and neighbors.
Chuck was active, involved and always ready to help anyone in need with a friendly smile, a funny joke and by sharing his strong faith in Jesus Christ. Chuck has left a legacy of love and devotion to all who knew him.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 21, 2012 in the Ashley River Baptist Church, 1101 Savannah Highway at 1:00 pm. Interment with military honors will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:00 pm until 8:30 pm at J. HENRY STUHR, INC. WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway.
