Charles (Ched) Edgar Staats, Jr., 74, of Charleston, SC, died on Friday, March 14th, 2014, at his home on James Island with his wife, Mary Ellis Staats and children, Susannah, Amy and Charles Staats, in attendance. In addition to his wife and children, he is survived by a sister, Ann Staats Brant of Shelby, NC, and two grandchildren, Olive and Ezra Chesluk-Staats.
Ched was born January 3rd, 1940, in Charleston, WV, to Charles Edgar Staats, Sr., M.D., and Catherine Thornburg Staats. His grandfather founded the Staats Hospital in Charleston, WV. He was an artist and college professor who earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard and an MFA from Boston University. He went on to teach at Thayer Academy in Boston, MA, and at the College of Charleston, The Citadel, and Charleston Southern University in Charleston, SC. Ched is remembered by his family and friends as a thoughtful, gentle man who won numerous awards for his art.
Funeral services will be held at Saint James Church on James Island at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 17, 2014. Interment, Churchyard.
