Charles R. Smith, 89, of Charleston, SC, passed away on September 16, 2014 at home after a lengthy illness, being cared for by family and Roper-St.Francis Hospice.
Born March 29, 1925, son of the late Herbert W. Smith, Sr. and the late Marcel Richardson Smith. He was married to the late Verna Amick Smith. Mr. Smith retired from Westvaco of Summerville, SC. He also worked for many years at Van Lott, Inc. He was a navy veteran and served in the Korean War. For many years he was an active member of the Omar Shrine Temple. He was of Lutheran faith. Before his illness, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved his Carolina Gamecocks. He was a loving family man and caring member of the community.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Charlene S. Erwin of Greenville, SC, and Donna S. Holliday (Jack) of Charleston; 4 grandchildren, Scott Erwin (Kelly), Blair Erwin (Linda), Leslie Moore (Rhett), and Lorie Carpenter (Bryan); 8 great-grandchildren, Jessica, Preston, Cayden, Brinlee, Cameron, Alexis, Braxton and Chappelle; extended family, Ryan and Blake Crawford; 3 step grandchildren; 7 step great-grandchildren; and 12 step great-great-grandchildren. He has 1 sister, Joan S. Geiger and 2 brothers, Herbert W. Smith, Jr. and Frank M. Smith; and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, wife, 1 sister, Annie Ruth S. Montjoy and 1 brother, James E. Smith.The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff of Roper-St. Francis Hospice for the compassion and exceptional care provided to Mr. Smith.
The Funeral service will be Friday, September 19, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL, 3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway, with burial following at Live Oak Cemetery, 3093 Ashley River Rd., Charleston, SC. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until time of service.
