Charles Eugene Roper, 91, of Goose Creek, South Carolina, widower of Mary Cathrine Lewallen Roper, entered into eternal rest Saturday, June 7, 2025. His funeral will be held Thursday, June 12, 2025, in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel, 2180 Greenridge Road, North Charleston at 6:00pm. The family will receive friends from 5:00pm to 6:00pm in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwoods Chapel. Interment will be in Timberridge Baptist Church Cemetery, Gainesville, GA on Friday Jun 20, 2025.
Charles was born October 6, 1933, in Alpharetta, Georgia, son of the late Ules Roper and the late Jessie Wehunt Roper. Mr. Roper served honorably in the United State Air Force, and retired as a Civilian employee of the Charleston Air Force Base. He also worked several years for the Berkeley County School System.
Charles Roper was a fixture in the early days of Goose Creek. In 1967-68 he managed the Goose Creek Pool Room, where he provided a positive influence for many young men from around Berkeley County. Chuck, as they all knew him, got along with everyone and never met a stranger. As his children got older he was active with the Cub Scouts as Packmaster, and the Boy Scouts as Committee Chairman. During his civilian career with the Air Force he mentored several young airmen, many of whom became lifelong friends. In fact, a few of them stayed with the Ropers from time to time and were treated as family. For several years Charles worked part-time for the Berkeley County School system as custodian at Boulder Bluff Elementary school, where all his children attended. After retirement, he supported his wife Mary in her venture into the entertainment world, booking musical acts throughout the state with Topstarz Promotions. In their later years they spent weeks at a time at their farmhouse in Georgia relaxing and socializing with friends and family, until poor health kept them from making the long-distance trips.
Charles and Mary became active with Bethel Baptist Church in the early 70s, and strongly “encouraged” their children to participate as well. Many lasting relationships were formed with families at Bethel Baptist. In later years the couple worshipped at Trident Baptist Church in Goose Creek.
He is survived by his children; Randy Roper (Neicy ) of Moncks Corner, SC; Regina Roper of Lavonia GA, Jeff Roper (Frances) of Lula GA, Jerald Roper (Sue) of Moncks Corner SC, Shirley Roper of Ridgeville SC, and Steve Roper (Kim) of Goose Creek SC, plus numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Roper and his parents, as well as his siblings JW, Everett, Geneva, Joe, Betty Sue, and Larry.
