Charles T. Olmsted, Jr., age 79, of Mount Pleasant, SC, beloved husband of Caprice “Cappie” Porter Olmsted, passed away suddenly at home on September 2, 2025.

Chuck was born on July 22, 1946, in Bexar County, San Antonio, Texas, the eldest son of Lt. Col. Charles T. Olmsted, Sr. and Pearl Falls Bickham Olmsted, who preceded him in death.

As the son of a career military officer, Chuck spent his formative years living on military bases around the world. At just two years old, he and his mother boarded a ship for a transatlantic journey, stopping in Gibraltar before continuing to the military base in Ashiya-Nagoya, Japan. The family later returned to the United States, stationed at a base in Maryland, where Chuck’s two brothers were born. Further postings included Wheelus Air Force Base in Tripoli, Libya-where his sister was born-and Larson AFB in Washington State, where his father served as Base Commander. The family’s final assignment brought them to Hunter AFB in Savannah, Georgia.

Chuck graduated from Herschel V. Jenkins High School in 1964. He went on to attend the Georgia Institute of Technology, earning a degree in Industrial Management in 1968. A proud Yellow Jacket, Chuck was a lifelong fan of Georgia Tech and especially loved the school’s iconic Ford Model T mascot, the “Ramblin’ Wreck.”

Following in his father’s footsteps, Chuck joined the U.S. Air Force in 1969, serving as a Lieutenant and Weapons Controller at Danang Air Base in Vietnam, stationed at Monkey Mountain.

After his military service, Chuck embarked on a successful professional career. He worked as a sales manager in specialized computer software, traveling extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Later, he transitioned into a second career as a senior loan officer and mortgage broker.

Chuck met Cappie in Atlanta and it was love at first sight- true soulmates. They were married in 1979. Over the years, they lived in Atlanta, GA; Beaufort, SC; Jacksonville, FL; and ultimately made their home in Mount Pleasant, SC to be closer to family and enjoy retirement. This year, they celebrated 46 wonderful years together.

A deeply engaged and dedicated member of his neighborhood community, Chuck took a genuine interest in the lives of those around him. He was known for greeting everyone by name and always offering a friendly smile or wave as he, Cappie, and Winn cruised by on the golf cart. He gave generously of his time, volunteering at community events and gatherings. He was passionate about advocating for the betterment of the neighborhood. Many will fondly remember his involvement in the annual Fourth of July parade, where his joyful spirit and community pride were on full display.

A music lover and vinyl collector, Chuck especially enjoyed artists from the 1970s like John Prine and Bob Dylan, and more recently, Susan Tedeschi. He enjoyed snorkeling in the Florida Keys and the Caribbean.

Chuck will be remembered as a devoted husband, adored son, brother, uncle, great-uncle and loyal friend. He was generous in spirit, compassionate, and always ready to lend a helping hand-without expecting anything in return. A natural mentor and thoughtful problem-solver, he was a steady presence in the lives of those he loved. He had a gift for bringing people together and making everyone feel like part of the family.

In addition to his wife, Cappie, Chuck is survived by his brother, Dr. Thomas Russell Olmsted and his sister, Ann Olmsted Morell (Randy). He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. William Lawrence Olmsted. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews: John Thomas Olmsted, Russell Randall Olmsted, Susan Catherine Olmsted (Dakota Foster), Charlotte Ann Olmsted, Thomas Carey Morell (Andrea), Margaret Morell Sanchez (Jeremy), William Randall Morell, Mary Morell Hull (Myko), Andrew Christian Olmsted, and Elizabeth Olmsted Griffith (Carter).

On his wife’s side, he is survived by his brother-in-law Scott Coleman Porter and sister-in-law Kimberly Porter. He was predeceased by his brother-in-law William H. Porter, Jr. His nieces and nephews include William Wesley Porter (Brianne), Kayce Porter Bates, and Jacob Scott Porter.

Chuck’s memory will also be cherished by many lifelong friends and colleagues, and his beloved dog, Winn (age 9). He was also predeceased by his much-loved golden retrievers: Max, Teakwood, and Chaz.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a memorial donation in Chuck’s name to his church, Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church, 302 Hibben St., Mount Pleasant, SC 29464. Contributions may also be made to his memory at Charleston Animal Society.

A casual, informal celebration will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd, Mount Pleasant, SC, at 2:00 pm followed by refreshments.
