Listen to Obituary

Charles Michael Chapman, 72, of Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Cynthia Bowman Chapman, entered into eternal rest on September 18, 2025. His Funeral Service will be held Friday, September 26th, 2025 in North Palm Church, 7176 Bryhawke Circle at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 25, 2025 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel.

Michael was born July 25th, 1953 in Macon, Georgia, son of the late Robert Lee Chapman and Mary Cook Chapman. In 1974, he was married to Cindee, his wife of 51 years.

In February 1977 they moved to Charleston where he began employment with the International Longshore Association, working for Puerto Rico Marine Inc. and several other shipping companies. He worked as a mechanical welder until his retirement in 2018 (41 years).

Michael enjoyed Island life, moving back to James Island, SC in 2019, where he was often seen riding on his red golf cart with his beagle, snoopy dog, Aubrie, making friends with everyone he met.

Michael spent many vacation weeks in Key West, Florida, fishing, exploring, riding his bike all over the island with his wife and family. He continued to travel to Key West each summer until his illness.

Michael was a man who could repair and design art with his superior welding skills, and he willingly gave help to anyone in need. Part legend, part handyman, and a full-time jokester, he outworked everyone, fixed what no one else could, and sometimes stuffed moss in his shirt to show off his “luxurious chest hair.” Behind the laughter was a tender heart that cherished every moment with family, especially his grandchildren. He had a knack for turning ordinary days into something memorable and left people smiling wherever he went. Always ready to lend a hand, he’ll be remembered as hardworking, patient, and strong. He found joy in simple things like fishing, flying kites, or being with loved ones. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and strength.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Richard Michael Chapman (Kimberly) of Fort Mill, SC; daughter, Sarah Chapman Truschka (Steven) of Mt. Pleasant, SC; five grandchildren, Elsie Chapman, Caleb Truschka, Hannah Truschka, Luke Truschka, Abel Truschka; and two sisters, Cathy Bartlett of Macon, GA, Diane Crosby (Pete) of Macon, GA.

In addition to his parent, he was preceded in death by his late brother Bobby Chapman of Macon, GA.

Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. West Ashley Chapel.
