Charles was born in Hinesville, Georgia on June 21, 1936 to Charles Jones Martin, Jr. and Anne Lucile Stacy Martin. Charles attended and graduated from Bradwell Institute. After high school, he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He graduated in 1959 with a chemical engineering degree. Charles served in the U. S. Army Signal Corps after graduation.

After his service in the military, Charles went to work for the Olin Corporation at their Pisgah Forest, North Carolina cellophane plant. He lived in nearby Brevard. It is here that he met Nell Marie Teele. Charles and Marie were married on April 8, 1967 at Brevard - Davidson River Presbyterian Church. Marie died November 3, 1969 of cancer.

Seeking a career change, Charles moved to New York City and entered the New York University Orthotics and Prosthetics program. Upon completion of this study, he settled in Charleston, South Carolina to work in the field. After a time, he and several partners established an orthotics and prosthetics service business on Meeting Street. He continued to work there until his retirement. Even after his retirement, Charles continued to improve his knowledge of orthotics and prosthetics technology. While attending a conference abroad, Charles was struck by a truck. The result was a number of fractures to his right leg. The leg was subsequently amputated at the thigh. Thus, Charles then went on to use the products he had built and fitted for many years.

Charles resided in Charleston beginning in 1976. He was a member and sang in the choir at First Scots Presbyterian Church in Charleston. He enjoyed his time in the choir and with other choral groups. As the opportunity presented itself, Charles traveled extensively throughout the eastern United States.

Charles is survived by his older sister, Elizabeth Martin Dominy of Toomsboro, GA; niece, Anne Dominy Metz of Dacula, GA; and nephew Perry Martin "Marty" Dominy of Toomsboro, GA.
