Charles Markowitz, 91, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Gucia Kochman Markowitz entered into eternal rest Saturday, January 26, 2019. His funeral service was held at the graveside Sunday, January 27, 2019 at Brith Sholom Beth Israel Cemetery "Maryville", Sycamore Street at 3:30 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.
Charles was born November 15, 1927 in Stuttgart, Germany, son of the late Israel Markowitz and Freidal Mendlewicz Markowitz. He was an owner of Marko's Furniture Mart and was a member of Brith Sholom Beth Israel Synagogue. He was a survivor of many of the concentration camps built during World War II, including: Auschwitz, Dachau, Bergen-Belsen, Lodz Ghetto, a death march, and many labor camps. He joined the Army and became a paratrooper during the Korean War.
He is survived by his two sons: Ira Pincus Markowitz of New Orleans, LA and David Markowitz (Lisa) of Atlanta, GA; nine grandchildren: Caroline, Anna, Alex, Scott, Michael, Rachael, Cameron, Samantha and Danielle.
