Charles Herman Howell, Sr., 94, of Charleston, SC, entered into eternal rest on August 6, 2021. His funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 15, 2021 in the J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel, 3360 Glenn McConnell Pkwy, at 3:00 pm. Interment will follow at Live Oak Memorial Gardens, 3093 Ashley River Road. The family will receive friends prior to the visitation starting at 1:30 pm in the West Ashley Chapel.
Charles was born March 23, 1927, in Union, SC, son of Willie Howell and Bridgie McCullough Howell. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a successful self-made businessman with nearly 70 years in the retail shoe industry, a devout Christian, an avid golfer, a diehard Braves fan, and a loving family man. He was a member of Church Creek Presbyterian Church and remained a loyal donor to many organizations. Charles' generosity and love was a selfless gift he gave to everyone in his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah H. Baskin (Barry) and son, Charles H. Howell, Jr (Betty Hendrick), and stepdaughter-in-law Penny Arthur; brothers Billy and Donald (Rachel); three grandchildren; Scott Baskin (Jane), Brett Baskin (Jenna), Thomas Baskin; Two step-grandchildren, Andy Arthur (Leigh Ann), Becky Gressette (Sid), one great-granddaughter (Ella Baskin), and three step great-grandchildren (Drew, Will, and Luke Arthur). He also leaves behind his loving caretaker, Joi Johnson.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Ophelia Howell; brothers, William, Ervin Lee, J.E., Howard, Ned, Eugene, Russell; sisters, Callie Clark, and Sara Ann Farr; and stepson James Arthur.
