Charles "Charlie" Wesley Hester, Sr., 82, of North Charleston, South Carolina, husband of Mary "Dora" Eudora Hester, entered into eternal rest Friday, December 29, 2023. His funeral service will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2024 in Highland Park Baptist Church, 6211 Murray Drive, Hanahan, at 11:00am. Interment will follow at Carolina Memorial Park, 7113 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston. The family will receive friends from 10:00am until the time of service. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Northwoods Chapel.
Charles was born January 3, 1941 in Hogansville, Georgia, son of the late John "Curly" Hester and Anna Ruth Hester. Charles attended North Charleston High School prior to joining the United States Army. After his service in the Army, he worked at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and then Navalex until he retired in 1995. Upon retirement, he stayed busy serving his local church, working in his yard, hunting, fishing, attending sporting and school events for his grandchildren, and spending time with his family, especially his wife, Dora. For decades he was a member of the Oakman Hunt Club where he spent most of his weekends hunting with his fellow club members. Charles loved his country, the Clemson Tigers, and the Atlanta Braves. He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. The family would like to thank the team at Wellmore of Daniel Island and Hospice Crescent for the loving and compassionate care they provided.
Charles is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dora Hester, son, Charles "Chip" Wesley Hester, Jr. (Sally), daughters, Denise Bessinger and Alyce Kennedy (Sean); he was "Pop" to 5 grandchildren who he adored, Megan Bessinger (Ryan), Hunter Bessinger, Haley Kramer (Will), Wesley Kennedy (Kimmie Edwards), Abigail Mueller (Hunter); 4 great grandchildren, Birdie & Hudson Campbell and Kit and Lily Kramer, sister Cheryl Youmans, sister in law, Mandy Wade (Mike), Aunt, Tina Newton and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked that donations be made to Highland Park Baptist Church, 6211 Murray Drive, Hanahan, SC 29410 or American Diabetes Association at https://www.diabetes.org.
