Charles Narey Griffin

Dr. Charles Narey Griffin, Jr., 83, of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina, husband of Blossom Krawcheck, died Friday, January 12, 2018. His service will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 1:00 p.m. at J. HENRY STUHR INC. MOUNT PLEASANT CHAPEL, 1494 Mathis Ferry Road. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the chapel. Interment will be private. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC. Mount Pleasant Chapel.

Charles Narey Griffin, Jr., was born August 30, the son of Charles Narey Griffin, Sr. and Gertrude Whitehead Griffin. He grew up in Washington, DC, and also spent a great deal of time in Lake City, SC. His father was in the Navy during World War II. Consequently, in his early life he moved many places.

In 1946, Charles returned to Washington. He continued his education at Landon School for Boys. He graduated in 1952, and attended George Washington University and Duke University. After three years of college, Charles was accepted to The George Washington School of Medicine. As a senior medical student, he was selected for the Navy Senior Program and the Smith-Reed-Russell Award. He graduated in 1959.

Charles interned at the Charleston Naval Hospital, spent a tour of duty in Ashland, KY, then began his residency in Radiology at Philadelphia Naval Hospital. During residency, he studied at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, DC, and was first in his physics class at Bethesda Naval Hospital.

After finishing his residency in 1965, he was stationed again at the Charleston Naval Hospital. He completed his military service in 1969, and joined the Radiology faculty at the Medical University of South Carolina. He was a faculty member at the University for 34 years. He retired as an associate professor of Radiology in 1997.

Dr. Griffin was active in the South Carolina Radiological Society throughout his career, and served as president. He was Medical Director of the Trident Radiology Technology Program, a member of the Radiology Society of North America, Society of University Radiologists, Charleston County Medical Society, and Fellow of the American College of Radiology.

Charles is survived by his wife, Blossom Krawcheck; two daughters: Jeanne Griffin Hill of Mt. Pleasant, SC, and Michelle Griffin Dysthe of El Cajon, CA; a son: Charles Jamie Griffin of Mt. Pleasant, SC; and a brother-in-law, Jamie Hartwell Cockfield of Macon, GA; his sons-in-law: Max Lloyd Hill III and Scott William Dysthe; his daughter-in-law: Anne McFarland Griffin. He is also survived by six beloved grandchildren: Max Lloyd Hill IV, Charles Griffin Hill, Ann Evatt Hill, Leilani Janet Dysthe, Elijah John Dysthe, and Emily Caroline Griffin. He was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Pamela Cockfield Griffin and his parents.
Charles Griffin was a good man. He was much loved by family and friends. May Charles rest in eternal peace.
