Charles "Charlie" Anthony Gilliam, 95, of Charleston, South Carolina, widower of Ruth Ivey Gilliam entered into eternal rest Tuesday, May 1, 2018. His Funeral Service will be held Saturday, May 5, 2018 in Citadel Square Baptist Church, 328 Meeting Street at 12:00 p.m. Interment, Live Oak Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Friday from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. in J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Downtown Chapel.

Charlie was born April 8, 1923 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, son of the late Samuel Gilliam and Eugenia Byars Gilliam. He was a retired supervisor with the South Carolina Department of Agriculture. Charlie was a member of Citadel Square Baptist Church where he organized the Joy Group and was also the choir director for the Joy Group. He was active in the Exchange Club of Charleston and Strict Observance Lodge # 73, A.F.M. Charlie was a volunteer police man for the City of Charleston for over 30 years. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels and loved to coach baseball for the City of Charleston Recreation Department. Charlie was past president of Mitchell School PTA. He was a member of Charleston City Council and was Mayor Pro-Tem in 1973. Charlie received the Lonnie Long award for volunteering for the Exchange Club of Charleston as well as the Senior Living Longevity Award from the Charleston Commission on Aging. He was also listed in "Who's Who" for South Carolina Politics.

Charlie was an avid golfer and once shot a "Whole in One" at the Charleston Municipal Golf Course. He was very active and enjoyed walking with friends at The Citadel Mall. Charlie was generous to a fault and will be truly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his two daughters, Marta G. Boggs of Mount Pleasant, SC and Charlotte G. Townsend of Charleston, SC; five grandchildren: Nicole Wilder (Bareiss), Ashlie McGuire, Ali Wilson (Chris), Thomas Townsend and Lorraine Perazzola (Carl); and 10 great-grandchildren.
