Charles Michael Bruce

December 12, 1943 — February 14, 2022

Charles Michael Bruce, 78, of Charleston, slipped away into the arms of his Savior, February 14, 2022, at the Cottage of Roper Hospital. Mike was born at home in Charleston on December 12, 1943, to John Henry and Mary Dorothy Barnette Bruce. He graduated from Carlisle Military School and from The Citadel.

Mike loved his God. He was a faithful member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for over 40 years where he served as a Deacon and Treasurer. Old Man, as he was affectionately known at Westminster, particularly enjoyed working in the kitchen and helping to organize and prepare the annual Thanksgiving Eve Shrimp Boil and Oyster Roast.

Mike loved his country. He served proudly as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division and as a captain with the Green Berets, Special Forces in Vietnam. For his service, he received the Bronze Star, the Parachute Badge, the Air Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnamese Jump Wings, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Mike loved his family. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Allyn Smoak Bruce. They were high school sweethearts having met when he was a student at Carlisle in Bamberg. He is also survived by his two sons of Charleston and their families of whom he was so proud: Charles Allen Bruce (Janie) and Henry Walker Bruce (Janice), and his beautiful granddaughter, Spencer Allyn Bruce, on whom he doted. He will also be greatly missed by Buddy and Skitty-Cat of the home. In addition to his parents, Mike was predeceased by his brother, George Walter Bruce and his beloved first-born son, John William Bruce.

Services will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1157 Sam Rittenberg Boulevard, Charleston, SC, on Monday, February 21, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. The service can be viewed via live stream by visiting the church website at wpccharleston.org. Inurnment will follow immediately in the Memory Garden adjacent to the church. Following the ceremony, the family will greet friends at a reception in Covenant Hall.

In lieu of flowers, those who are so inclined, can make a donation in Mike's name to Westminster Presbyterian Church or to the Epilepsy Foundation, 3540 Crain Highway, Suite 675, Bowie, MD 20716.
