On March 28, 2013, Cecile McKenzie Thigpen, a long time resident of Charleston, passed away. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse D. Thigpen, a World War II veteran and Southern Bell Telephone Company construction supervisor.
Mrs. Thigpen was born on November 23, 1921, in Lake City, SC and was a graduate of Columbia College. She was active in student affairs, being a member of Alpha Kappa Gamma and the president of the Baptist Student Union. Mrs. Thigpen had a long and distinguished career as an educator, beginning as a teacher in Kershaw, Hebron, and Cades, South Carolina where she was also the principal and basketball coach.
In 1945, she and Jesse married and moved to Charleston, where she was one of the founding faculty members of First Baptist Church School. She retired in 1983 after 32 years of teaching English. Dedicated to serving others, Mrs. Thigpen led an adult Sunday School Class for over 20 years at First Baptist Church and held the role of Volunteer Chairman for the Ronald McDonald House for 2 years.
Mrs. Thigpen was committed to her family, being the oldest of 4 children, and a devoted wife and mother of 4 children. She is survived by a son, Jesse D Thigpen, Jr., and wife, Martha, of Charleston; 3 daughters, Barbara T. Lane and husband, Edgar, of Orlando, FL, Nell T. Mobley and husband, Robert "Buster", of Greenville, SC, and Mimi Thigpen of Atlanta, GA; a sister, Lois Holtzscheiter, of Myrtle Beach, SC; 6 grandchildren, Chad Lane, Carroll Woehr, Paige Capes, Allison Mobley, Andrew Thigpen, and Anna Thigpen; and 6 great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral service in First Baptist Church of Charleston, 48 Meeting Street, Monday, April 1, 2013, at 11:00 am. Private family burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. Friends may visit with the family at First Baptist Church of Charleston Monday from 10:00 until 11:00 am. Arrangements by J.
